Excuse my use of language, but trust me, there is no 'nicer' way to describe a sly.
I am soooooooooooooo very proud of my Vietnamese background, yet sometimes my beloved Vietnamese make me feel so ashamed, disgusted, oh so so soooooooooo low. We ARE among the smartest people in the world, no mean to sound haughty, but I do believe that we are. How many of us have been a victim of racism? Yet how many of us think TWICE about the reason why we're being discriminated against?
Yes ofcourse, people discriminate us because we are smart, and by smart, I mean hell yeah we're always in the top 25% of graduating students, for the most case, but also because many of us use our intelligence to cheat, and scheme.

Disagree? I'll tell you my part of the story. My job as a part-time associate at Express (clothing store) opens doors for me to encounter people from all over the world. I can honestly say I am a patient girl, or at least I am trying my best at being very polite with everyone, but there is always a limit, a line drawn. It doesn't require a high IQ point to know the fact that 'you should treat others the way you want to be treated;' it's just common sense. I manage to memorize most of the customers' face who regularly shop at our store, and they manage to remember my name. They've always come to me for 'help.'
" Ủa, em là người Việt à ?Xinh gái quá" - said a 40-year-old woman ( I'm only 18)
" Dạ, cảm ơn chị quá khen " -( uhuh, I called her chị even though she's about my Mom's age;no big deal, though)
" Em em, có coupon không em, giảm cho chị $30 nha cưng."
orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
" Em em, tính coupon rồi đưa cho lần sau xài lại nha em "
:timvo::timvo: that's how it always ends up like : " COULD YOU PLEASE GIVE ME A COUPON." ( IS THAT WHY THEY ALWAYS COMPLIMENT THAT I LOOK SOOOOO PRETTY? LOL) I occasionally give them coupon even though it might get me in trouble, I feel like I should help my fellow Vietnamese out. It does give me a sense of joy being able to help.................. but as they review their true identity as LOW LIFE SLY DOGS ( *OUCH*,) I start feeling used, disappointed, ANNOYED and ASHAMED.
------------------------------
*SELFISH* ( working in the DRESSING ROOM)
-" Hi, how is everything working out for you in here?" - I knocked, door by door down the hall.
-" Oăn Mo MI Nu't !!!!!! " -yelled a familiar Vietnamese voice from the other side of the door ( I swear she was screaming her lungs out.)
-" Ok, i'm sorry, I was just checking."
-" EY EY, can you please get me this shirt in size XXS and XS, in red and also in yellow."
-" We don't seem to have many in stock anymore, but I'll definitely check for you. Give me a couple of minutes, please." - I replied, and quickly stumbled out the door with a handful load of clothes that she tried on and did not like, for another duty from the 'QUEEN.'
She's been in their for literally 40 minutes, sitting on the little leather bench inside the fitting room, talking with her friend on the phone who was also trying clothes on just two doors down the hall, and .... putting LOTION ON HER FEET.
How would you feel, if you were me, trying to be as nice as possible, calming other angry customers who have been waiting in line for quite a while.
------------------------------
* SLY/SCOUNDREL* ( At the CASHIER. THEY REALLY CROSSED the line)
I've been dealing with returns after returns, most of which were from my LOVELY VIETNAMESE customers.
Have you guys ever noticed the habit of Vietnamese women of buying $500 worth of clothes at a time, then returning them in the next few days........ sometimes... without the tags attached, with lost receipt, or wrinkled clothes??????
This 'mature'( agewise) lady in a SEE THrough shirt with BOOBS bouncing all over the place ( guys, laugh all you want, I'm serious LOL) came up to me at the cashier with clothes to return. She has a California ID ( driver license) and a genuine receipt, so it was no problem. But as I was processing her return, I noticed a shirt that came out in Express's spring 2008 collection( 2 years ago.) The computer approved her $328.99 return, though, but it seemed to be very FISHY to me, still. After saying goodbye to her, I carefully examined the shirt, and noticed how the brand tag( connected to the price tag) was SEWN on the shirt. I asked my manager, and realized that she BOUGHT a new shirt from our store, kept it, and decided to take of the tag to sewn it on an old shirt that she bought but never liked, to RETURN it.
FOR HEAVEN's SAKE, I was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo pissed off. How low could they get for spending the time for those schemes. I felt like an idiot, ofcourse, but oh gawd, where is her dignity?
------------------------------
These are just examples of the pieces of SH1T that ruins the Vietnamese image in others' eyes. Nowadays, I guarantee you that Sale PEople despise Vietnamese customers, for a legitimate reason: Many Vietnamese are soooooo smart, they can get away with devious cheat and schemes.
How about you guys, have you ever known or seen someone taking advantage of people around them, their own intelligence for bad purposes? Share if you have any stories, or at least share your thoughts about " ROTTEN APPLE SPOILS THE BARREL"

oh let me tell u, sometimes all I can say in my mind was WTF!?!
I just recently got a job at a nails salon, the first day I went to work, the owner can't speak English even she's been here 12 years, and whenever someone asks, it's something she's proud of :so_funny: So when she was done with the customer and she needed to bring that customer to another chair, in just one minute, that girl decided to show her mom her toe nails. The owner, for some reason God knows what, yelled out loud "HEY! SIT HERE," I'm telling u with her loudest, annoying voice. Everyone in the shop was starring at her and I thought to myself "WTF." Another time, I went shopping with her and I swear I will never ever do it again. We went to a pharmacy and there were makeup stuffs in there. Lipglosses always have plastic wrapping around it to secure and guarantee it's new. Man the minute we looked at it, she sat down and opened several of them even we did not intend to buy anything, we just wanted to look. I was like "uugggrrr WTF should I just leave her there?" Dang, I really wanted to just leave her there and walk home by myself.
One of my friend's cousin, who's an international student, came here for 3 years but I dont really know what he's thinking. During lunch, he sat in the cafeteria eating with a lot of people around. After eating, he just decided to throw all of his left-over stuffs to the floor. One of his friends told him not to do it and guess what he answered? "Oh they should appreciate me cuz I give them something to do." Man, I feel lucky cuz I was not sitting there with him or I would of just slap his stupid face uuuugggrrrr

thanks for sharing, HH.
I feel like people have become so self-concentrated and IGNORANT about the rest of the world around them.
The incidence with your cousin, if I were you, I would really slap him, lol . Violent, I know, but someone needs to kick some sense into his head. He reminds me of people who throw clothes all over the place, thinking " I'm here to shop, not clean. There has to be a mess for the associates to clean. DUHHHHH!!!!!!!! "
So Obnoxious.

haha true true totally agree, however it's my friend's cousin, not mine, I'm not that lucky LOL
Other story, I haven't had a chance to spend time around VN'ese ppl up until I get this job, and I'm telling u, just this woman, I don't need to go anywhere else or talk to anyone else, I can know everything about every VN'ese person in this town, and sometimes she even tries to tell the customers too in her broken English, it's just an embarrassing thing to do for VN'ese people uugghhhh and seriously, I was sitting there and "WTF!?!". Gossipping is like one of the trait VN'ese people are born with, and sorry no offense to anyone but it just irritates me badly.

I can certainly sympathize.... **nod nod**
I've been working in a VNese restaurant (a simple one with cheap prices) for one year and a half now, and I've got pissed off more often than I could imagine.
On the note, it was both on customers and coworkers.
One particular incident that I can recall is about a Vietnamese customer. He had a pretty-expensive-looking sports car - convertible, in fact - and wore branded T-shirt and pants when he went to the restaurant. A bit later his whole family, including distant relatives as well, would come waltzing in, making a ten-people-or-more troop. He would order lots and lots of food that they couldn't even eat all of the food right there and had to take it home. Then when he came to the cashier, he would say that he knew the owner, was the owner's friend, blah blah blah, and therefore the owner had said that he did not have to pay.
(Ok, I haven't met him that often, but my coworker told me the story. I rolled my eyes in disbelief Oo__oO)
One evening, he came again. We consulted the old man in the restaurant, who was the father-in-law of one of the owners, and the old man said that it wasn't true (would it, really!), thus, we must charge him. We were told that the most we could do was to let him have only his own meal free.
So when he, using his usual scheme, was about to walked out without paying, we called him back, explained. He said, no no, he was owner's friend, and like that, shamelessly walked out. When we was still debating on how we should cling onto him, he came back. "Okay, I'll pay," he said.
And after that he never comes again.
Really '______________'
P.S: The owners only come to the restaurant on payday. They are pretty easy-going too. Which is one of the reasons why I haven't quit this job yet.

Well well... :D :D :D
Not only in USA, there are many Vietnamese in Sweden, too. Once, when my family just got here 1-2 days, a woman volunteered to take us on a tour to shoping centers. It turned out that woman wanted to "lift" things, so she asked us go along. The record of her "lift" trip would be perfume bottles, an expensive jacket and make-ups. When a policeman approached us, she quickly hid behind our backs.
We didn't even have any paper. How the f*ck could she do that to us? My mom went bananas!
So, yes, I have one good Vietnamese friend. Her mother couldn't even speak Swedish after 6 years living here and forced my friend to work a lot. There was another man who has lived here for 10 years or so, he couldn't speak the language well either. And, he acted very bossy to us as if we should look up to him because he has been here longer than us!!
Well well, it makes me mad and sad to mention my very own experience about Vietnamese population in Sweden. Luckily, I was bullied in my class because I am Asian, not particularly Vietnamese. ^^
@Lu: Tough job handle those "tieu nhan" ^^ Luckily, I don't have to work (I have to income or any money on my own either -_-'')

Thanks for all your comments. It does not matter whether they're Việt Kiều or people in Vietnam, it's the rotten personality that affects others' perspective about our culture.
HHXL: LOL at the Gossip Lady. I am usually appalled by people's ability to OVEREXAGERATE stories. One of my friend was tutoring this really cute vietnamese guy whom everyone has a crush on, next thing you know, she's known as a slut. I mean... gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Lu: Oh wow, if i were you, I wouldn't be able to contain my anger. If that dude wants free food, he should have gone to the homeless feeding parties.
Thientu: Simply observe how people treat each other in our society, TT. You will see that a lot of people are just so so rude, so shameless.
TIenu and all of you guys, too : Tienu's story makes me realize how crumbled apart Vietnamese are. In California, there is a large population of Mexican, Phillipinos and Chinese/Taiwanese; they seem to stick together really well. Each individual has the gut to stand up for his/herself when treated poorly by people from different heritage/race, and they as a community defend each other when being discriminated against. Vietnamese community, on the other hand, stuffed with self-indulgence, tend to put themselves on top of everyone else. What matters most is who has been here longer, who has a higher income, who can afford 5-star hotel room, who deserves the title " Việt Kiều." If one has all that, he/she becomes " THE SHIT," so untouchable, so 'high-class' to even bother about others.
Wearing expensive clothes, speaking perfect English, looking polish and beautiful give them a sense of pride, take them to a whole new level of self-admiration, so exquisite that stepping on people of their kind is alright, and cheating is just as okay.
You know, minor accidents in parking lots so oftenly blown out of proportion by Vietnamese, it's unbearable not to laugh. This woman accidently bumped into another car while trying to get out of her parking spot, leaving a tiniest dent and scratches on her car as well as the other woman's brand new Lexus. Oh gosh, instead of being calm and reasonable to deal with the ACCIDENT that it was, the two women turned it into a " ĐM, you dumb b1tch" cat fight. They argued for a good 30-minutes on " You're jealous of my car," " YOu show-off slut, who the hell do you think you are;" none were relevant to the accident:so_funny:; I had to laugh seeing the police officer standing there in AWE.
I've gotta wonder, WHY, people WHY ? Isn't it enough to be treated unfairly by people from different race, why do you discriminate, tread on people among your own kind?

well I think that is how the "old generation were raise" and that had been our "tradition and part of our culture" :so_funny: I have to say that vietnamese are really smart but a little selfish. Not to mention that they are very "self-center". "có người còn thấy người giàu hơn mình thì ganh tị và cạnh tranh với họ, còn người nghèo hơn mình thì mình tránh xa và khinh khi họ" dónt know how to express that to making sense in English :D why it has to be like that right? I mean just mind your own business and give out hands if it needed. lol

Cuz VNese mind others TOO MUCH.
Imagine a small community, like in the restaurant where I work, the coworkers backstab each other so often that I lost track of counting. Every time I come to work, I'll hear a new complaint, a new rumor, for ex, a girl who's gotten a little fatter, she's rumored to have been pregnant with her brand new boyfriend.
'___________'
Sometimes I hear rumors and complaints about myself after they have gone through many gossiping mouths, they make me explode with anger. You see, even the smallest things I do, such as putting the cans of coke into the fridge, next week when I come back I'll receive a complaint: "You did not arrange the labels faced-out!", or filling the coffee filters, I'll hear: "You did not arrange the filter lids in one direction!"
(nắp phin cà-phê thường có một góc nhọn ra để cầm, bà ấy lại muốn tớ khi sắp chúng vào khay phải xoay nắp làm sao cho các góc cùng chiều '__')
Even the bosses never say anything about this. '_____'
Are those things so important?? It's not like the customers will see. Even if they see, does it matter to them? I'd rather use the time to do something more useful like filling up the sauce bottles or sweeping the floor. -___-''
Oh, they even went as far as saying: "Always so dirty and messy! International students are just negligent, careless bunch!", which pissed me off like hell, since I always remember to clean up everywhere before I leave the restaurant.
And they didn't even point out where the heck was dirty and messy!! >___<
What's more cowardly is that they never say the things straight in our faces. They talk in the back. And to think they are "respectable" adults. >___<
Scary >________<

Don't think that it is impolite, sh.t or wtf, and don't be mad for these people's actions. If you grow up in Vietnam, you would think that it is normal. Lucky for all you guys here, you go to school and live in a developed society. Like me I grew up in Vietnam, and I experienced enough difficulties and poverty in my life. Have you guys ever heard " giàu có sinh lễ nghĩ, nghèo khó sinh trộm cướp."?
To explain my point, I need to recall the history of Vietnamese migration to foreign counties. Only a small number of Vietnamese were middle and higher class. Many others were low income people who didn't go to school, who save every penny to survive.
Unlike Japaneses and Koreans who have education and money, many of us came from poor area in Vietnam. We have little education, little communication skill and little self-esteem. We do not care for what other people think but for our own pockets.
However, I can't agree more what a shame for exporting this habit to other countries. I'm so shameful for myself anytime hearing loud [ like the thunder] Vietnamese voice in the crowed. What is the point to speak loudly and noisily? I don't know, but maybe that how we Vietnamese can show to other people we are proud of being Vietnamese.
There are two major kinds of Vietnamese: too shy or too confident.
The too shy Vietnamese mostly had had high education and professional career before immigrating to an other county while the too confident Vietnamese had had little education and labor jobs before leaving Vietnam for a better life. The first group want to gain their knowledge and learn new things, and they realize they are so normal compared to others; they are are shy because they are embarrassed for themselves. A a result, they make their children study as hard as possible so that the children can fulfill their incomplete goal.
The second group also think about their children. They believe my life is nothing but my children must have everything. They don't care what jobs they do. They save every penny they can. They don't care what others think about them-and people like them.
I don't know what to share more. Give a sympathy and an excuse for ourselves- Vietnamese. I only expect our generation and next generation can make the Vietnamese image look better in foreigner view.

Dear Ngay Hom Qua,
I myself was born and raised in Vietnam; I do think those things are normal, yet they are impossible to be considered as 'okay' things to do . I do have the utter most respect for us Vietnamese who are fearless of barriers, who endlessly strive for success. Yes, be more sympathetic with those who do not have any other choice but steal in order to survive, but be disgusted by those who take advantage of " " giàu có sinh lễ nghĩ, nghèo khó sinh trộm cướp" and use it as an excuse for their action.
Educated or uneducated, rich or poor, it's manner that differentiates a low-life scumbag and a respectable soul.
You know, my parents and I moved to the U.S about five years ago, our lifestyle have changed one way or another, yet our perspective in life remains the same old ' traditionally vietnamese.' I still have the habit of cutting out coupons at the grocery/drug store to save some pennies. My mom and I still, regularly, save milk/juice/water bottlles and tin cans and bring it to a local recycling center ( thu lượm ve chai) for some extra cash. When we go shopping, I make sure people give me the right coupon without giving them any attitude; hey, if you have coupons, max them out, right?! People have laughed at me, called me " stingy Vietnamese," so what, hate me if they want, I'm not doing anything wrong. My point is, no shame, no shame when you're making the best out of what you have without cheating, taking anything from anyone else.
We are living in foreign countries, that means we're more lucky than people back home in Vietnam, materialistically. People can argue that the older generation had to give up everything they had, what's so lucky about that? WEll, think a bit, about the children ^_^ . You were rich in Vietnam, now you're dirt poor in the States, or elsewhere in the world; that does not change your identity; poverty cannot affect your dignity, can it? I still think it's so shitty how people think that just because we are poor, we HAVE to care for JUST ourselves.
I think most of us have experienced what Tienu have experienced: being used by other Vietnamese who " came here first." If those people were poor, did they still deserve any sympathy from us ?
Don't help others when you can't help yourselves. But don't help yourselves by taking from others. Beg if you're a beggar, but don't steal; you're just a piece of trash. Scream if noone can hear your voice, but don't use an attitude to boss, make people listen to you; you're nothing but a loud b1tch.
I am just as proud as you guys all are of our background; I wouldn't change it for the world. Give sympathy to those who deserve it.Tee hee, and I do have high hope that our generation & the next generation will polish our image in others' eyes. Thanks so much for your comments.

well, looking on the bright side of the matter, these "pieces of sh!t" give you and me a strength to get better ^^ :D :D My dad, who is a simple businessman in Vietnam, always told me to treat people exactly as they want us to but NEVER become like them :D :D :D Sad as it is, my family lives very quiet and separated from other Vietnamese. This afternoon, I sat next to a Vietnamese boy on a bus. None spoke a word :D (He was a cute one, too :D)
Thanks, tawny, you answered me so wholeheartedly. ^^ However, I don't think it is pride. It is somewhat FEAR, too. Fear of showing their true identity, their true self. :D
