how u date a white girl bro? what you mean date? you can improve by hanging out with native friends though. However, I have difficulty to involve with them. Culture and life style ảre things separate me with them. For example, they like American football while i like soccer. They listen to rock and rap- i like pop.

Yeah, lots of people have the same problem. I think that you should go to study at some English center. I'm studying in ILA center for 3 courses and i see that it's really helpful. The best way to make progress at pronounciation is talking to someone who's good at English. I have good speaking and listening skills because i 've listend to "Let's go" CD when i was 6 years old. May be you need more time to practice huh ?? I also try to watch English channel like: Disney Channel, Cinemax, HBO,.... It's a really good way ^^
Well, my brother got 7.0 points at eilts test. But i don't know anything about this. So.. sorry >__<
P.s: Oh my brother said that you shouldn't write" i'm; doesn't; don't;...." at the ielts test. You better write: " I am, do not;..."
Good luck ^^

HOld up, even though spending some extra money for those HỘi Việt Mỹ centers might help you a little bit, but one-on-one practicing or practicing by yourself helps just as much, if not,.... more. Keep in mind that once you are placed in a class, your teacher will have ... let's just say 10 or more students. Are you sure that he will actually sit down with every single one of the student and correct their pronunciation? Usually teachers will be fine with the "alright pronunciation though with an accent." ALso, what if your teacher comes from SINGAPORE or has an Australian, Arabian, Russian accent ?? OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!YOu can't expect too much from sitting in class, you guys.

People who have less accent aren't NECESSARILY those who start at an earlier age. I mean, a little kid would have a hell of an accent if his/her teacher had an accent. If you started out with a heavy accent, you could improve. Nough said, people tend to MIMIC sounds and record them; therefore it's hard to fix/improve it, but not as hard as trying to reverse to a fresh start once your "style" has already been established >_<

Try out ENGLISH STUDY ( the disc costs 10 ngàn, dude); It's like being taught one-on-one by teachers with PRECISE ENGLISH/AMERICAN accent guaranteed!!!!!!!!and trust me, it's worth your time and money. ( sounds like I'm paid to say these good things for the program or I'm over confident haaaaaaaaaa )

P.s: Life is tough, but adventurous and fun, Viggo à ^_^

10,000 VND? wow, it's such a cheap program. Life is not beautiful at all though. I refer to talk with non native friends anyways. I learn from their accent, and correct myself accent. That sounds nonsense uh? Because I know I will make the same mistake, I learn their mistakes carefully and check dictionary or ask for help from other people. Damn, I can not imitate the way native speak. What wrong with my tongue! I still keep my Vietnamese word sometimes. Maybe I have been using Vietnamese for many many years, but I just really speak English for 4 years. It makes sense. I will spend for the rest of my life to learn how to speak English correctly. Maybe in the next 20 years, I will speak English better if I use English more and more. However, I still have heavy Vietnamese accent because I do not have the talent to learn language.

What I really want to say is that it depends on each person's situation. Except for native speakers and young talented people, if you learn English late, despite you practice and improve your pronunciation, you still have your native language accent.

Accent is not the problem, but if you mispronounce- oh no- people will not understand you , and you may regret for what you have spoken out for a long time.

Then, but what causes you mispronounce a word? Now, because you didn't know how to speak this word correctly because you speak this word by what you think and what you hear but not the way native speakers say.

I leaned myself a lesson. Try to forget you native language for a while when you learn a new language. And spend your time to listen more before you speak.

I had never taken an English tests before I left Vietnam, so sorry bro, I can't help you with it.

Lol, that's why people hesitate to buy the program. But really you guys, trust me; I can't guarantee that you will have the perfect, perfect accent like those native speakers, but it's worth a try, right. Bet it's better than learning from a teacher with ridiculously heavy accent :hihi: . Gawd, I owe my whole freaking life to ENglish STudy, man!!! I've been keeping the same old disc with me since I was in Vietnam ( 6 years ago); I don't know if I can, but I'll try to make a copy, then I'll let you guys know.

Also, I've been wanting to have an English club in H2t:rain:. I notice how advising on H2t hasn't been that helpful, so I've been thinking about "Voice Chat" on Yahoo Chat ROom. People can actually help each other out with pronouncing stuff, or accumulative questions that they might have. I know people are just as busy as I am, but we'll make time. :hum::hum::hum::hum:
P.s: chance to show off your ENglish skill too :hihi: :so_funny:

Tawny, I remember 3 years ago this English box was much crowed than now. Many and many had left the room. I am one of the last member who still be here. I have read and posted many topics, and I learned a lot from other members. Now my English is much much better than three years ago. I can at least express whatever I want to say. I always want to have more friends who can help me learn English better, or exactly what you just suggested an English club.

It would be great to have a club like that, and it would be greater if there is a chat room for everybody. I think we need to learn the academic English language not the as well as the informal English in the street. Who can teach us is our friends. Talking in person can help me improve my pronunciation and elevate my confidence, but it doesn't improve my writing skill. Writing English correctly is much more important than write in shortcut for who are learning English.

The reason we should have an English club here because you guys and I are Vietnamese. We know each other problems very well, or in other words other problems are also our.

If there is a club, I'll participate in.

when i heard u guys talked about accent in english :D
but i think accent 's not an important thing
when u speak any languages u just need pronouncing completely clear the word u wanted to speak :D
DON T TRY SPEAKING WITH LOCAL ACCENT IF U CANT :D
in fact most of u guys living in US and us accent that 's not too hard to speak than ENGLISH accent :D
THAT 'S WHAT I THINK
trust me because we are vnes :D our accent can t be perfect TO SPEAK WITH US OR ENGLISH ACCENT :D
and im sure :D if i speak english with u guys in my accent
u guys can not undestand all what i say :D

It all depends, I think.
Ofcourse, if you live in the US, especially in the Mid, Southern & Western Area, you will have a hard time understanding their accent, let alone speaking like the British. The same goes to the British who wants to speak with an American accent.

For us Vietnamese, most of us learn how to pronounce words like our local people do, BUT ( big but), establishing the LOCAL accent is extremely hard. I'm assuming many of us here have lived in a ENglish-speaking country for quite some time ( avg 2--> 10 years); many can pronounce words precisely, but most of us don't have the "so-called ACCENT" . It's not like we're trying to become Native speaker, which is impossible, lol, but having a close to natural accent helps build our confidence, don't you think. My mom has the worst time gaining self-confidence, because though she can pronounce words correctly, she still has a heavy Vietnamese accent.

Most of us won't ever achieve such a Natural ACCENT, but a few of us can and will ( psh geez ......... why not)

*** About the club thingy: I'll post the information up tomorrow. YOu must be willing to share your Yahoo IDs though:rain: . And for safety, the date and time will be announced through private messages.

seriously when we speak english or any languages we just need confident and try our bést :D
u no what? in fact for us VNes we can speak english quite better than some people like INDIAN or RUSSIAN even the accent :D
AND THEN i just meant try our if u can :D
and another thing i want to tell u guys and i think that could be surprised u guys :D
the people who speak correctly english it s not are brits ,us or australian
they are dutch and german people :D
EVEN THEIR ACCENTS AREN T LIKE US OR BRITS BUT THEY SPEAK QUITE CLEARLY THE WORD AND MOST OF PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THEM WHEN THEY SPEAK :D

để ý dấu nhấn đó bạn
khi nghe chỉ cần nghe rõ 1 vài từ, đừng căng thẳng wa [có gì thì nói repeat plz =]] ]
đùa thôi, theo mình thì khi học vocalbulary bạn nhớ kĩ cái chỗ nào nhấn đó, mỗi từ có 1 cách nhấn khác nhau nên dễ nhận biết

Hanging out with some native friends is a good way to improve your pronounciation skill. But you gotta talk and join their conversations, instead of just sitting there and listening passively. Besides, you can start watching TV or movies, and listening to musics. That would help you a lot; not only you can improve your pronounciation skill; but also learn about their Pop culture. which draws you closer to your native friends since u have something in common to talk about.
My friends still laugh at me sometimes because of my accent :thatall:. Don't feel embarassed. I would just laugh away and ask them to correct me. You can learn a lot that way. Learn as you go!!!
Good luck!

No need to use correct grammar?
Yes it is quite easy to speak " GIBBERISH" / use sign language to make people understand what you want to say, but even a pet can do that. Would you rather for people to look at you as a respectable, well educated person? :hihi: I mean, one of the reason we go to school is to learn how to become a proper communicator, isn't it?

You're welcome Viggo,

I guess you are living in Australia. If so it's lucky for you, 15% Australian population is Asian. You can enjoy Vietnamese food everyday uh?
I also think your English is not bat at all. You just want to speak English perfectly right? I just suddenly remember what my teacher told me that you need to listen correctly if you want speak correctly.
Strategies and techniques to learn English are everywhere, but which one you like and feel comfortable is much more important. I myself have not found an appropriate yet.

Don't believe to people who recommend you to speak English with out grammar. Many native speakers would misunderstand you, and the consequence may be horrible.

I have spent for years to check about whether or not American use grammar in speaking. My answer is that they always use grammar in speaking. Like us, Although we don't realize we use grammar in Vietnamese, we do. English speakers usually talk in sentences with correct grammar.

Although we don't speak like we write but And remember, the way you speak will affect the way you write; therefore pay attention to that.

Are you sure? I don't think it is true though. I have a Russian friend who speak English so well, and she even helped me sound out new vocabulary. Although she has accent but compared to many Vietnamese she speak much much better.

You are so wrong to say Asian Indian have more accent than us. I know they used to be dominated by British, and English is used widely in India.

I honestly and painfully to admit only few Vietnamese who came to a Spoken English nation late can speak English correctly. In general, We are the ones who have funny accent though.
