Phuonganh Hoang Luong, currently known as Emily Hoang, is a fifth-year student at University of California, San Diego. She majors in Computer Science and will obtain her Bachelor of Science Degree in June 2004.
She was not accepted into UCSD the first time she applied, the time when she just graduated from Patrick Henry High School. She graduated from Patrick Henry High as a salutatorian with a 4.2 GPA, but she had only spent two years in the United States which was too short for her to learn enough English to be ready for a big school like UCSD. Being rejected from UCSD didn't take away her courage to succeed but only fueled the fire inside her. With the determination to be at UCSD, she enrolled in a community college near by trying to get her way to UCSD.
She spent the first two years of her academic career at Grossmont College, a small community college in El Cajon City, California. There, she took all the general education classes that are required by UCSD. Additionally, she took all of the classes from the college that are equivalent to UCSD classes so that she could get ahead once she was at UCSD. Even though most of her time was consumed by school work, she also had a part time job to help her family's financial. In two years, she had completed all of the courses that could be taken.
Achieved her first goal of getting to UCSD, she promised herself to make her time at UCSD worthwhile. Now, only one more year and she will be graduated from UCSD. Currently, she is looking for an internship in Software Engineering for the summer to gain more practical knowledge. At the same time, she is studying for the Graduate Record Examination to get ready for the application period to graduate school in November. And, that is her new goal: being a a Master of Science student in Computer Science at UCSD
