Thuật ngữ Albinism - chứng bạch tạng, có nguồn gốc từ tiếng La-tinh (Albus có nghĩa là màu trắng). Đây là một bệnh bẩm sinh do rối loạn hormon tuyến yên. Đặc trưng của bệnh này là một phần hoặc toàn bộ cơ thể bị thiếu sắc tố melanin. Những bộ phận thường bị tình trạng này là mắt, da, lông (rất hiếm khi chỉ bị riêng ở mắt).
